Otter Mercator Multi Folding Knife Large
A “legend” is back. More than 60 years ago, the 4-part Mercator pocket knife was produced by the Kaufmann and Sons company in Solingen. Otter has revived the knife based on old patterns and old drawings. As before, it is built with 4 tools. A lockable knife blade, the awl for loosening knots and piercing holes in leather and fabrics, the can opener and a corkscrew. More than 120 operations are necessary for the production. Everything is made by hand. The awl and the can opener are forged on belt drop hammers, pre-ground and then finely ground. The blade is made of carbon steel that holds its edges, is ground and then plastered. The handle of burnished steel does not have the rust resistance of modern coatings, but it gives the knife a high-quality appearance. These are all properties that can hardly be found with today’s pocket knives. The blade steel C75 is a carbon steel.
