History – How everything started
“PUMA-WERK Lauterjung & Sohn” in Solingen, Germany, has a history dating back to 1769 which adds up to almost 250 years of cutlery experience. PUMA cutlers have produced some of the world’s finest barbers’ razors, professional knives, table knives, shears, scissors, dagger and swords for the army – both functional and decorative.
The family Lauterjung established the brand name PUMA as an international attribute for astonishing quality.
From 1936 – 1945 the production was supervised by the war industry during the second world war.
PUMA’s modern history began in 1947 when Baron von Frankenberg, son-in-law f one of the famous Lauterjung brothers, took over the management of the firm and decided to specialize in pocket-, utility- and sporting knives for hunters.
Over time the company changed their production from pocket – and household knives to functional knives e.g. hunting-, outdoor- or fishing.
In the 50s PUMA developed some of their most popular hunting products in history (see below “Famous Knives”). From 1964 every knife gets a unique number incl. exercise book and year of production.
In the 90s the company used new production methods e.g. CNC controllers and laser technology. In the last years the company extended their product line. The labels “IP” and “TEC” were added to the traditional PUMA knives from Germany.
The PUMA name has achieved great significance and memorability as a trademark with the sharp teeth of the cat symbolic of the sharp cutting edge of a PUMA knife. Modern technology combined with almost 250 years of knife making skills has made PUMA one of the finest lines of cutlery for the outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, backwoodsman, camper and collector.
Solingen – Cutlery capital of the world
Solingen’s supremacy in metal crafting was fostered by its auspicious location in the southern Ruhr District. This greatest of European coal regions yields 90% of all German bituminous coal, so it was but natural that North Rhine Westphalia, the state in which Solingen is located, would become the heart of Germany’s iron and steel production.
This vast experience with metal and its ready availability, coupled with the German people’s traditional technical skills and penchant for research, bore the inevitable fruit of Solingen’s supremacy in cutlery.
From sword blades to straight razors, shears and scissors was but a natural accompaniment to the march of the time and progress. And the development and perfection of hunting and pocket knives was the next logical advance in a country where hunting has always enjoyed the status of a sport rich with tradition.
Today, Solingen is a thriving city with a population of approx. 200,000. Though largely rebuilt following heavy bombings in World War II, it retains a vitality tempered with charm, innate pride in production and accomplishment, legendary dedication to the creation of cutlery to the extent that there still exists “cottage industries” where items are made by artisans in their own homes.
